TAINAN (TVBS News) — Tainan's Public Health Bureau (台南市政府衛生局) announced on Tuesday (Sept. 10) the 17th imported dengue fever case in Tainan City — a Filipino man who entered Taiwan on Sept. 8 through Taoyuan Airport.

Health authorities reported that the patient exhibited fever symptoms upon arrival. A rapid test confirmed dengue fever, leading to his immediate hospitalization. On Monday night, doctors diagnosed him with dengue fever type 3.

The bureau stated that the patient will remain hospitalized until the viremia period ends on Sept. 13. They emphasized that he has not entered the community, reducing the risk of local transmission.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Centers for Disease Control (疾病管制署), dengue fever outbreaks in Southeast Asia and South America have been severe this year, with confirmed cases surpassing the five-year average.

As of Sept. 9, Taiwan has recorded 194 imported dengue fever cases. Most infections originated from Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, while South American cases primarily came from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, and Colombia.
