TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) expressed Taiwan's openness to adopting new nuclear technology in an interview published by Bloomberg News on Monday (Oct. 21).

During the interview on Oct. 17, Cho emphasized the importance of reaching a domestic consensus on nuclear safety and waste management before openly discussing nuclear energy.

He reiterated that Taiwan would not face industrial power supply issues before 2030. He stressed the importance of aligning with global trends.

Moreover, Cho stated that the government would ask Taipower (台電) to retain nuclear power plant managers to meet future needs for nuclear technology development and waste management.

Bloomberg noted that Cho's remarks signal a shift in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP, 民進黨) traditionally anti-nuclear stance. This change comes as Taiwan seeks to balance its energy needs with the demands of its growing semiconductor industry.
