TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) announced on Tuesday (Sept. 10) that Taiwan has welcomed approximately 5 million international visitors by August.

Chen credited the Tourism Administration (觀光署) of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) efforts as it intensified its international tourism marketing efforts.

He highlighted the diverse strategies employed by the Tourism Administration, such as hosting the Tour de France Challenge and inviting Japanese actor Satoshi Tsumabuki (妻夫木聰) and South Korean singer Cho Kyu-hyun (圭賢) as tourism ambassadors. These initiatives aim to attract tourists from Japan, South Korea, and other Asian regions.

Regarding cross-strait tourism, Chen noted that over one million Taiwanese have traveled to China, while only about 200,000 Chinese tourists have visited Taiwan. He urged China to allow more of its citizens to visit Taiwan, emphasizing the potential benefits for both sides.

Chen also addressed the tourism situation in Hualien County, stating that while there have been recent improvements, he acknowledged that more work remains. He plans to meet with local business owners this afternoon to discuss strengthening measures and listen to their feedback, aiming to help them secure more business.
